Blokes & Sheds - Mark Thomson

Mark is the Author of Blokes and Sheds, and Makers Breakers and Menders he is also the Director of the Institute of Backyard Studies.

Mark lives in Adelaide.

What’s the best thing about garage sales?

The chance you might find absolutely anything.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen at a garage sale?

An enormous collection of false teeth.

What goes on in your garage?

The personal compost of my life story.

Whose garage would you most like to go to?

Nikola Tesla’s.

What would be your dream garage sale find?

A first edition Raymond Chandler novel.

What’s the most treasured possession in your garage?

The Random Excuse Generator.

Who would be in your dream garage band?

Miles Davis on trumpet, Django Rheinhart on guitar, Sly and Robbie as the rhythm section…for a start.

Whose second hand shoes would you most like to walk in?

Nobody - second hand shoes never for - I know.

What’s the best tip for ‘Garage Sale etiquette’?

For the seller - worry about having as little as possible at the end of the day i.e. flog it, don’t hold on to it. And for buyers - make it nice and gentle for sellers to part with their dear possessions. Make them smile and they will probably sell things cheaper.

What’s your top sustainability tip? Is there a way somebody can usefully reuse that stuff you would throw ou? Somebody somewhere almost certainly wants some of your old stuff so use the Internet to find it a loving home.

Find Mark on the internet:

The Obnoxious Owl Garage Sale

Just wanted to shine a quick light on a special garage sale happening in Perth - the Obnoxious Owl Garage Sale.

Check it out here

Hosted by the inimitable (yet do they try!) trendsetter/blogger/writer Tammy Croucher, the Obnoxious Owl Garage Sale Trail is sure to fairly…special.

“I’m thinking put-put golf, lemonade stands, smoke machines, wading pools-just the usual things you’d find at a garage sale”, says Tammy.

Tammy even has some tips fot the day:

  • Make sure you withdraw some $$$ and then go buy a coke or something because stall holders are like Big Issue sellers…they expect change! $50 notes are just going to cause problems
  • Wear something that you can easily slip off and maybe wear swimmers underneath, this ain’t Myer honey - there ain’t no changerooms.
  • Be prepared to rummage and show up with an open mind and some imagination

Check the article that appeared in the West Australian newspaper

What’s the best thing about garage sales?

Garage sales are a great way to de-clutter, make a little pocket money, connect with neighbours and friends as well as have a little fun. Oh and o ourse they save useful things from going to landfill.

What’s the best thing you’ve ever bought at a garage sale?

A pristine gatefold copy of James Brown’s ‘Big Payback’ on vinyl. I love heavy funk!

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen sold at a garage sale?

A vintage 1963 Jaguar that was for sale for $3k with the motor in the back seat.

What goes on in your garage?

We have a communal garage that our Captains share on Ben Buckler in which we keep everything from camping gear, fishing equipment, a wide selection of surfboards and shred sleds, paddle boards, tools and stuff.

Whose garage sale would you most like to go to?

MMmmnn maybe Mark Thomson, author of Blokes & Sheds. There’s a man that knows and has seen some serious sheds and garages.

What would be your dream garage sale find?

One of Jake Burton’s early snowboards handmade in his Vermont garage in 1977. That’d be a sweeeeet find.

What’s the most treasured possession in your garage?

That would have to be my well-loved Eric Koston skateboard from the mid 90’s. So many memories…

Who would be in your dream garage band?

It’d have to be Miles Davis doing a live performance of “Kind of Blue”.

*Daz is also known as Le Gran Fromage, Captain, Daz, Dazzla, Dazzarola and I’ve even heard ‘Chief’, do you have a special name for Darryl Nichols?

Garage sale aficionado, Yumi is also a Presenter on “The Circle on Network Ten & “Max on Foxtel and Austar.

What’s the best thing about garage sales?
I love garage sales because they’re still a bastion of the genuine bargain. But lately I have come to love them because they create a neighbourly spirit; you meet people who live local to your area whom you might never have laid eyes on before!

In my neighbourhood, baking cupcakes to give out at garage slaes seems very fashionable, so now the neighbours try to outdo each other with the cupcakes and the emphasis has shifted away from their junk!

What’s the best thing you’ve ever bought at a garage sale?
I bought some David Bowie vinyl singles that I still cherish to this day. The other day my daughters found a garage sale run by cute Asians who collected cute Asian candy and toys and kept them pristine, untouched and completely germ-free. AMAZING, CAN YOU PICTURE MY GIRLS’ FACES?
What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen at a garage sale?
Someone in Bondi trying to charge $28 for a second-hand T-Shirt and telling me, “It’s the coolest T-shirt in Bondi”! What an asshole!
What goes on in your garage?
Lady madness! Because we’re an all-female household (me and my two daughters) our garage is choked with dolls, barbies, teddy bears and a very lady-like tool kit filled with lady-sized screwdrivers, wrenches and hammers (which I can use, thank you).

Garage Sale Trail Ambassador - Annalise Braakensiek
Annalise lives at Bondi Beach.

What’s the best thing about garage sales?

Apart from the fact I love to buy second hand and vintage for sustainability reasons, I love the possibility of finding an incredible piece for next to nothing. As they say, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure.

What’s the best thing you’ve ever bought at a Garage Sale?
Jimmy Choo boots worth $1,800 for $100! Or my antique bohemian crystal chandelier worth $9,500 I got for $400.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen at a Garage Sale?
My friend Chris dressing up in all my clothes at my last garage sale! Hilarious!

Whose garage sale would you most like to go to?
Kate Moss.

What would be your dream garage sale find?
Some antique native Indian jewellery at a bargain price.

Who would be in your dream Garage Band?
Bob Marley

Whose second hand shoes would you most like to walk in?
Someone who’s a size 39 and has a penchant for Louboutins! Ha

What’s your best tip for ‘Garage Sale etiquette?’ (For example, what time to turn-up, making it look neat, prices, etc.)

Wash everything first, I like to have racks and a table to make it easier for people to rummage, set up early so you’re ready when the people start flocking. Be comfy - I like to have some chairs, or a beanbag, some good tunes playing and have fun with it.

The Garage Sale Trail now open for business.

Happy Wednesday Garage Salers!

In case you hadn’t noticed we are a-live…a-live! The brand spanking new Garage Sale Trail went live last Tuesday to coincide with out national launch.

Needless to say, registrations are beginning to trickle in and we are already very impressed!

So far favourites include “Grandma’s Phat Rocking Threads” in Bondi (which also scored a mention in this week’s Wentworth Courier), the intriguing “Trash, Treasures & Trousers” registered near Greenslope in Brisbane and “The Sale of the Century” in the ACT, which we hope will live up to its ambitious name.

You may have also heard a thing or two about the Garage Sale Trail in the media. Our ‘Captain’ Darryl Nichols has been talking up a storm on ABC radio in Sydney, and Ambassadors including Mark Thomson, Rocky Elsom and Yumi Stynes have appeared in the Canberra Times and on 2GB, and starred in green media which is just fantastic.

If you’re feeling generous you might even want to spread the word by sharing a couple of these links:

Concrete Playground, Live Local, Green Magazine or by inviting your friends to the Garage Sale Trail via our Facebook Event.

Finally, keep those registrations coming - the sooner the better! And if there’s something special you think we ought to know about don’t hesitate to drop a line jess@garagesaletrail.com.au

:) Jess

In NSW leading councils including the City of Sydney, Waverley, Woollahra, Randwick, Warringah, Parramatta, Liverpool, Blacktown and Lane Cove will officially host the Garage Sale Trail. Sellers all over Australia are encouraged to register their garage sale for free on the Garage Sale Trail Map at www.garagesaletrail.com.au. Those looking to bag a bargain can log onto the Garage Sale Trail website and browse registered sales by postcode or by interest like books, clothes, kids toys or music.

Participants are encouraged to donate 10% of their takings from the day to the Garage Sale Trail’s official charity partner Keep Australia Beautiful.

We all have fantasies. If you’re into super luxe, slightly kooky and irrevocably unique garmentsThe Tauranga Repertory Society garage sale is most definitely for you.
We saw this article in the Bay Post and it got us to thinking, what if we could convince some of Australia’s finest theatre’s to get on board with the Garage Sale Trail and sell some of their old costumes? Imagine picking-up a nose from Cats? A hat from Wicked? Or a big flouncy dress from Carmen?
We’re working on it, in the meantime if you have any ideas please let us know.

Garage Sale Lesson #2 - Tarp it up.
Firstly, don’t be intimidated by the size of this garage. Yes, it is large enough to house a small village that in no way diminishes small or no garage sales.
So, the tarp - not only does it make the grass look even greener but it also keeps things dry and highlight the goodies on offer - and what goodies they are.
If you were expecting a new addition to the family this little collection pretty much offers everything you’d need in term of infant seating and entertainment.
How much?
$60 for the lot!
Yes, and having snooped around on some baby sites, you could probably expect to pay upwards of $350 for this in a shop.
