COMING TO A SUBURB NEAR YOU: THE GARAGE SALE TRAIL
T
he first ever Garage Sale Trail was brought to life as part of the inaugural Sizzle, Bondi Beach Community Festival held in May 2010. It was an idea that was developed in close collaboration with Waverley Council to help promote recycling & sustainability in Bondi, bring people together and have a little fun!
“The response from the community exceeded all expectations. Originally we were hoping to have 50 garage sales on the day but in the end there was 126!” says, Sizzle Festival Director Darryl Nichols.
How it worked:
Participants registered their Garage Sale for free via a website. They chose a name for their sale and provided some details on types of things they were selling. A participant pack was given to each registered garage sale including a t-shirt, trucker hat, posters & signage.
A trail map (highlighting the location of the sales) was also produced and kindly published by local community paper, the Wentworth Courier. This made it easy for bargain hunters to bargain hunters to plan their own Garage Sale trail and find their treasures.
What happened?
The Garage Sale Trail was a smashing success benefiting both the community and the environment. From the 126 registered garage sales around $100k pocket money was made and 15 shipping containers worth of ‘stuff’ given a new home and saved from going to landfill – and that’s just from Bondi!
‘One lady even sold a 1963 Jaguar for $3,000’ says Ben Peacock of Republic of Everyone.
The Garage Sale Trail also did a great job of bringing the community together.
So what’s next?
We’re taking it national and we want people all over Australia to get involved! Imagine, not only the waste saved from landfill, but the fun that could be had as communities all over Australia come together.
We’ve launched a microsite to support our campaign to take the Garage Sale Trail national. The objective of which is to garner support from the public, government and business communities. Whether you’re an individual interested in hosting a garage sale, a Council that would like to get involved or a business looking to bag truckloads of media and credit for your support. It’s simple as visiting www.garagesaletrail.com.au
