Happy Friday Salers!
Lot’s of things happen in garages. Obviously, we at Garage Sale Trail HQ have a healthy fascination with what can be sold from these suburban temples. But thanks to the groundbreaking work of Mark Thompson and his seminal piece Men in Sheds, we’ve experienced a collective reawakening (of sorts) with what goes on behind the shed’s closed door.
Mark’s metaphoric classroom is the Institute of Backyard Studies and the scholarly philosophies contained within (www.ibys.org)
Take Frank, some would mistake publicly wearing a Chook Shed on your head as a bit ‘weird’, but not Frank. A proverbial Emeritus Professor of the Shed, Frank not only carries his chook shed on his head, but also tows another behind his car touring his feathered friends all over the land.
By doing so, Frank challenges the fundamental concept that the garage (or in Frank’s case the chook shed) need be stationary or even attached to a house.
Frank’s mobile chook sheds are an inspiration to Garage Salers all over Australia. Not only does he give hope to us who are garage-less, but he is a living breathing example of what magic (egg-laying, chook-touring or otherwise) can happen when we put our imaginations to work.
Lessons of the week
#1 Garages, sheds (and sales originating from within these spaces) need not be made of bricks and mortar
#2 Garages let us express our creativity - we make things, mend things, break things apart and put them back together again
#3 Real musicians take their chooks with them on tour
Be sure to tell us about your weekend finds!
